Kelly Frankeny

Kelly has more than 20 years experience directing and working in newspaper and magazine visual departments and in media design. She has a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas and has taught publication design in Europe and the United States. She has consulted in Latin America based out of Mexico City and is now the Garcia Media Creative Director, New York. Her design and visual direction have won numerous awards and she has conducted training and seminars in Europe, Latin America and the U.S.

Work experience: Kelly was an Assistant Managing Editor for Design for the San Francisco Examiner, receiving the Society for News Design’s “World’s Best-Designed Newspaper” four years in a row. She was a co-founder and Chief Creative Officer for duJour Media, Inc. in San Francisco and worked as an assistant art director for the Dallas Times Herald. She has redesigned the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, El Gráfico and El M in Mexico City and El Siglo de Torreón in Torreón, Mexico.

She has consulted for newspapers such as the Asbury Park Press, The National Post, El Universal, Reforma, La Voz de Michoacan, El Siglo de Durango and for the Belo Corporation, Mexico. She was one of 30 visual journalists selected to author “Newspaper Design: 2000 and Beyond,“ published by the American Press Institute in 1999.

Teaching and lecturing experience: Kelly has taught publication design at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain and at San Francisco State University. She has also lectured at Humbolt State University, the American Press Institute and various seminars in Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, Portugal and the United States. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Society of News Design for eight years.
