Liberation, a publication considered to be the “darling of left wing French intellectuals” for more than 25 years has launched a new look.

Led by Dr. Mario Garcia, the Garcia Media team created a redesign with a more unified and harmonious visual look throughout the paper, including better navigation and better utilization of photos. The redesign also incorporates a brighter color palette, a new typography and a playful, modern font, true to Liberation’s history of using script typeface.

“Our greatest challenge in redesigning Liberation is that it has always been known for being totally unconventional,” said Garcia, CEO of Garcia Media. “Its editors have never paid much attention to traditional journalistic rules. So we had to consider how to take the newspaper into its next life, where the editors want to attract younger readers, and particularly younger women.”

Liberation editor Serge July said the new packaging should heighten readers’ experience of reading the paper. Garcia responded to July’s request to make the paper “more funky.”

“The end result is a redesign that really captures the visual showcase they use everyday in the paper,” said Garcia. “Readers of this newspaper will continue to find surprises in its pages, but the new packaging will help them find the surprises sooner.”
