Extraordinary times in newspaper design

This is a first as far as I am concerned. Take a look.

These are extraordinary times in almost every aspect of our daily life.

Now you can add the word extraordinary to describe how the magnitude of the Covid-19 epidemic is also affecting the way news is displayed. Take a look at this front page of The New York Times.

I don’t know about you, but I had never seen anything but a powerful headline fall into that precious right hand side lead position on Page One of The New York Times. Yet, in what is a visually powerful graphic presentation, something other than type “dipped” into that precious real estate!




Apparently the sixth column lead spot has become a popular one for the designers at the Times to utilize for graphic emphasis as we see here:

We also see a portion of the graphic that climbs above perhaps the most sacred element of all on the Times’ front page: the flag (nameplate of the newspaper).
