Meet the new newspaper rack–with the video stream

Who says that a newspaper rack has to be static, as in something of the past? In Florida, the Tampa Bay Times has a different idea.

Newspaper racks. We all pass them. Not many of us drop coins to retrieve a copy of a printed newspaper from them anymore. I wonder how many stop to glance at the headlines peering from behind the glass window of most newspaper racks?

Except in the Tampa area, where the Tampa Bay Times (formerly The St. Petersburg Times) is trying to change our relationship to newspaper racks.

They are making sure there is nothing static about the Tampa BayTimes racks, and so they have come up with an innovative idea.

They are experimenting with installing a 24-inch monitor that streams news content and advertising in a seven-minute loop. The stream can update it in real-time with breaking news. It’s all part of a new initiative called TimesVision designed to display video billboard content at their print distribution racks in select retail outlets.

In the newsroom, a team of journalists will be producing short, sharp videos that will play on the TimesVision monitors — interspersed with marketing spots, advertising and in-store promotions at host locations.

I hope to see one of them face to face the next time I visit my second home in Tampa Bay.
