Mobile storytelling across a variety of fields

I am in Hollywood, Florida, to do a keynote presentation today at the BIMS 2019 event.

It is always interesting when I conduct a presentation for a group that is not your traditional group of editors and journalists from a media organization that produces a daily newspaper or weekly magazine. Such is the case today as I do a morning keynote presentation for a group of publishers, writers, editors and technical folks at the Business Information Systems Summit 2019.

This is an annual event that brings together business information leaders to talk audience engagement, marketing, data, sales strategies.

I had a chance to mingle with many of the participants at the opening cocktail and dinner reception last night and was fascinated by the variety of groups that these people address.

For example, one of my dinner companies deal with presenting daily information to emergency doctors.

“They have a very short attention span, and we must communicate with them quickly and effectively,” the publisher of this group said.

To my right, a publisher from Atlanta dealing with an audience that deals with pension programs, and then another whose niche audience is “donors and giving” to non profit organizations.

What do they have in common?

It is imperative that they present information to be consumed on mobile devices.

That’s where my presentation comes in: Storytelling in the Mobile First Age.

Mario García

Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.

The newspaper remains the most powerful source of storytelling on the planet. But technology threatens its very existence. To survive, the Editor must transform, adapt, and manage the newsroom in a new way. Order The Story by Mario Garcia, chief strategist for the redesign of over 700 newspapers around the world.
