Washington Post: the Mueller Report made easy via dynamic digital storytelling

While it may have been a task to cut through the legalese of the 448-page Mueller Report detailing the intervention of Russia in the 2016 US Presidential Election, this 6-part series makes it easy to follow, fun to read and accessible.

Maybe more member of Congress—-and the public at large—-would have read the Mueller report if it had been presented like what The Washington Post team has accomplished here. After all, the original was 448 pages long across two volumes and four appendices.

I am impressed by the level of storytelling presented here . As always, they excel in the way that journalistic content and visual presentation combine to make the reading pleasurable. Written and designed by The Washington Post and illustrated by artist Jan Feindt, “The Mueller Report Illustrated: The Obstruction Investigation” brings to life the findings of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III in an engaging and illuminating presentation.

In their own words:

“This six-part series is drawn directly from episodes detailed in the Mueller report in which prosecutors found possible evidence of obstruction of justice, as well as congressional testimony and Washington Post reporting. Dialogue in text bubbles is taken verbatim from Mueller’s report, which cited text messages, contemporaneous notes and investigative interviews with first-hand witnesses who described conversations among key players. Words within quotation marks reflect exact dialogue included in the report, or comments made at public events or in media interviews.
Links throughout each chapter refer to the specific pages of
Mueller’s report that describe the scenes, as well as news stories. Illustrations of public events are based on news photographs taken at the time. The president’s tweets have been reproduced as they were written, although the number of “likes” and “retweets” may have changed over time.”

Look at these highlights which should inspire us all as we tackle more mobile friendly digital storytelling for our own products:

  • The break up of the online series story into six segments.
  • The visual unity through typography, layout and color palette.
  • The effective use of yellow and black, just perfect colors for the subject.
  • The use of sound, which can be enabled as you read the text.
