Nothing like a robust weekend print edition

I rejoice everytime I see a weekend edition of a daily newspaper that feels heavy, with the promise of many sections, some great lean back type of stories, and, yes, advertising supplements. That was the case this past weekend in Sydney, with the Sydney Morning Herald.

Sydney Morning Herald’s Weekend Edition: 6 sections plus a Magazine

There is something for everyone in this robust weekend edition of the Sydney Morning Herald.  It also included a four-page wrap around ad which became the newspaper's front page, that is, until you turn that page to find the real front page directly under it.

For me, this is a real treat, as I am used to seeing print editions of newspapers that border on the skinny side of the press run.  Many newspapers also carry those flimsy four-page sections that look and feel anemic.  No section should be 4 pages.  Eight pages should be a minimum, but, of course, I am aware that advertisers sometimes demand, and they get what they ask for.

Nowadays, it is the weekend editions that always offer more bulk, one of the reasons that I maintain that it will be weekend editions that will eventually survive as the print product.
