Postmedia: Launching the reimagined Vancouver Sun

Another Postmedia title introduces the new look & feel, and fresh approach to the presentation of news that was part of the 2014 project initiative in which Garcia Media participated.

The Vancouver Sun is the latest of the eight Postmedia newspapers of Canada to introduce a new look and visual identity. It is also a total rethinking of how news is edited, designed and distributed in the digital age.

We at Garcia Media are proud to have been part of a collaboration with Postmedia and its talented team.

The goal of the Postmedia project has been to give each platform—smartphone, website, tablet and print edition—its own place in the “media quartet,” letting the content and design adapt to each.  The tablet editions, introduced in 2014, are no longer part of the existing plan.

We worked closely with Postmedia Creative Director Gayle Grin, to create the new look that would carry across all platforms.

An important part of the project was to adapt stories to the platform in which they appear.

Here is how Editor Harold Munro introduced the new Sun:

The new print edition has been reorganized and redesigned with colour-coded sections for ease of navigation. The first section remains dedicated to local news, accompanied by the blue News pillbox logo.

Arts and Life has been rebranded as the You section, indicated by an orange pillbox. Inside these pages are your favourite Sun writers with stories about music, movies, theatre, style, restaurants, food and healthy life.

The red square indicates the Sports section, where we will provide local and international reporting and opinion, with an emphasis on weekend and Monday features.

We are also introducing two revamped sections.

The Business BC section is now called FP Vancouver, powered by Sun business writers and articles from the Financial Post, the respected business publication. As the week unfolds, watch for Asia Pacific coverage on Mondays, retail and technology on Tuesdays, the resource sector and green economy on Wednesdays, small business on Thursdays, real estate on Fridays and a business feature on the weekend.

Today we also unveil a new national and world section in the print edition. This stand-alone section of national and world news, opinion and features from the best journalists across the Postmedia network replaces the existing Canada/World pages.

Reed Reibstein was Garcia Media art director for this project.
