You’ve got mail! Yes, and it’s in the old mailbox.

How an enterprising New York Times reporter who checks her real mailbox—the one in the mail room of the newspaper—ended up with one of the best stories of the Presidential Election–a peek into candidate Donald Trump's income tax return.

Don’t forget to check for mail here from time to time!—Image courtesy of http://galleryhip.com/office-mailbox-images.html

Funny, I can go weeks without checking my mailbox at Columbia University, and days not stopping by the mailbox area in the co op building of my New York City home.

And a big portion of what I get in either one of these traditional mailboxes goes straight into the trash, especially if addressed to Current Resident, which is the bulk of it.

However, the fascinating story from Susanne Craig, of The New York Times, and how she goes to her mailbox often and it is there that she found one of the biggest tips for a story during the Election cycle, makes us stop to ponder about the importance of traditional mailboxes.

Yep, they have lost their urgency (as have printed newspapers, by the way), but they still are doing what they were meant to do.

For reporters, a good reminder.  For the rest of us, remember the famous line from that adorable movie Forrest Gump: Life—or, in this case, your mailbox, is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to find.

Times reporter Susanne Craig and her colleagues landed a big juicy one via the traditional ways of envelope, stamp, return address and a whale of a story—regardless of how it got there.
